Hungarian animator and fan designer Máté Szabó paid tribute to Disney’s animation roots with this 742-piece LEGO Ideas set and its 2 minifigures. Its black, white and grey palette recreates the look of the 1928 short Steamboat Willie, whose synchronised sound helped establish Mickey Mouse as a screen star.

The model echoes the cartoon’s rhythmic movement: pushing the boat turns its paddle wheels and makes the steam pipes rise and fall. Mickey and Minnie feature special silver-coloured decoration, while the working crane lifts a cargo of potatoes aboard. Now retired, this Ideas release combines an animator’s appreciation of film history with a moving display that brings its monochrome subject to life.
