The drawing is a preparatory study for the large canvas of the same subject executed by Podesti between 1844 and 1847. The work was commissioned for the council chamber of the Palazzo degli Anziani, seat of the Comune di Ancona. The work is now kept in the Pinacoteca Comunale Francesco Podesti in Ancona.
