The painting bears an inscription in a cartouche along the lower margin: "CARLVS CIGNANI ACCADEMIAE CLEMENTINAE PRINCEPS / PERPETVVS NOBILIS FLORENTIAE BONOMIAE ET FOROLIVI / EQVES ET COMES ANNVM AGENS 89 OBIIT VERO FOROLIVI / ANNO 1710 ETATIS SVE 92".

The composition of the painting come from the engraving made in 1717 by Thomassin Simon Henri on a drawing by Felice Cignani, son of the artist. Compared to the engraving, our painting also features a Cignani family's coat-of-arms in the upper left-hand corner and a honorary necklace on the neck of the sitter.
