A group of Japanese ivory netsuke, Meiji period, 1868-1912
elephant ivory four netsuke and one okimono (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) . - a figure intent on playing a shamisen, a traditional Japanese three-stringed musical instrument, wearing a dress decorated with floral motifs, a symbol of elegance and refinement, with a serene expression and natural gesture conveying a sense of calm; - a figure with a large hammer and long beard, probably depicting Daikokuten, one of the seven deities of fortune, commonly associated with the magic hammer; the long beard and gentle smile express wisdom and prosperity; - a small group composed of a figure with a drum and a child, the adult man is crouching while the child appears to be playing a drum; the interactions between the two figures create a sense of family intimacy. The two stand on a decorated platform; - a figure with a large folding fan is depicted in the act of dancing, expressing movement and grace; the details of the kimono are meticulously carved, showing attention to texture and pattern; - a male figure crouching with staff, probably in a contemplative or humorous posture; the fine lines carved on the kimono create an elegant decorative motif.
