Chinese ivory carving, Qing Dynasty, late 19th century

Height x width x depth: 25.5 x 10.5 x 9.7 cm. Weight: 1259 g
made of elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797).
It depicts a sage elder, an emblematic figure in Chinese tradition, sitting in a contemplative position. He is caught in the act of reading a book, which he holds in his left hand, while in his right he holds a staff adorned with ornamental elements, including a perforated rock, reminiscent of the shapes of Chinese gardens.
Next to the figure is carved a large feline, probably a tiger, with its jaws wide open, symbolising power and protection. The detail of the facial expressions and the drapery of the robes is masterfully executed, reflecting the craftsmanship of the time.
