The painting bears two old typewritten labels: one, affixed to the lower part of the stretcher, is in Swedish and includes an indication of the subject and an approximate date; the other, in Italian, is placed on the left side of the frame and contains an inventory description: "ABOVE THE DOOR / OF THE ENTRANCE TO THE BATHROOM / OF HER EXCELLENCY THE PRINCESS / No. 1."
The painting is a contemporary replica of the copper-panel original - slightly smaller in size (45x34 cm.) - executed by Domenichino, probably for the Colonna family in the second decade of the seventeenth century, and now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (1976.155.2). In his classic monograph on the artist, Richard Spear mentions a second version once in the collection of Cardinal Mazarin, where a 1661 inventory records a canvas by Domenichino depicting the same subject.
