Filippo Teodoro Di Liagno Filippo Napoletano
(Napoli, 1589 - Roma, 1629)

A Landscape with a Peasant Dance, Roman Ruins, and St. Peterโ€™s Basilica in the Background

Oil on canvas
cm. 50,5x60,5. Framed
This pleasant pastoral scene, set in an imaginary Roman campagna featuring ruins, dancing peasants, and a distant view of St. Peter's in the background, should be associated with that period of Filippo Napoletanoโ€™s late oeuvre which was formerly attributed to the Roman activity of Bartholomeus Breenbergh, or to other Flemish artists such as Cornelis Poelenburch and Gottfried Wals. Further evidence is provided by the two pairs of copper plates depicting Ruins and Figures in the Galleria Palatina, Florence, and the canvas of a similar subject in the National Gallery of Dublin.
