The figure of an Arhat or Arahant in Pali, meaning "worthy" or "venerable" in Sanskrit, refers to an enlightened being in Buddhism who has achieved Nirvana, freeing himself from the cycle of birth and death (samsara). The figure is depicted on a finely carved wooden base, probably boxwood or a similar dense hardwood. The figure holds an object in his left hand and has a prominent, smiling facial expression, complete with a beard.
