Large jade vessel, China, late Qing dynasty, early 19th century.

Width 35 cm; Height 8.5 cm
This large jade vessel, carved from a large block of semi-translucent green jade with brown veins from the Khotan region, is finely decorated with three dragons in relief amidst openwork clouds. The base is engraved with a fifty-six-character poem by the Qianlong Emperor, composed in the year 癸丑 guichou, corresponding to 1793, followed by two small seals; a third, large square seal is carved to the right of the poem.

枚枚青鎖與銀鋪,一例都京制度符。
體以帝王御宮殿,心惟黎庶奠寰區。
酌斟奢儉臨中國,環衛旗民壯遠圖。
敬仰戎衣未解際,依然有暇示規模。
The inscription reads:
The palace gates, magnificently carved with motifs and ornaments, meet the architectural standards of the capital. The emperor residing there always had the well-being of his people at heart. He believed that the country should be governed with a balance of luxury and frugality, and that caring for the people was essential to ensure lasting development.
Despite my military commitments, I always find time to admire the majesty of this palace!
