Rare pair of Chinese designer furniture, China, Inner Mongolia, Cultural Revolution.
Height 100 cm; Length 94cm; Width. 50cm
A rare pair of Chinese designer furniture decorated with monuments and pagodas from Imperial China, featuring an unusual depiction of numerous Maoist iconographic symbols. Two Red Guards, leaning on the pagoda's balcony, clutch the Little Red Book, surrounded by the rays of the red sun that "enlightens the people." Industrial progress is depicted with cars and buses speeding across bridges and a steamship in the water. The political campaign of this era, led by Mao Zedong, aimed to transform the "old culture" to establish a new one. This had a strong impact on the production of art objects, such as this furniture.
