Carved ivory sculpture group, Japan, Meiji period, 1868-1912

Total weight: 180 g
Antique elephant ivory sculpture group (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) made in Japan with great artistry during the Meiji period (1868-1912).
It depicts a vibrant and symbolic scene in which four skeletons are intent on playing musical instruments and sharing a convivial moment around a table. The work, characterised by fine workmanship, exemplifies the craftsmanship of the period and the taste for the depiction of animated and detailed scenes. The skeletons display dynamic expressions and postures, giving the composition a sense of movement and realism. Each figure is engaged in a distinct action: one plays a drum decorated with flame motifs, another plucks the strings of a lute-like stringed instrument, while the other two hold percussion and wind instruments. In the centre of the scene is a table decorated with minute details, above which are bowls with fruit, a teapot and skulls.
The contrast between the macabre theme of the skeletons and the joyful atmosphere of the music and banquet recalls motifs related to the transience of life, the irony of fate and the celebration of existence beyond death.
The sculpture is placed on a finely worked rosewood base, which lends stability and further elegance to the ensemble.
