Elephant ivory and silver wax seal, France, 19th century
Total weight: 19 g
The upper part is carved in the round and represents the bust of a mature male figure with a thick beard and wavy hair. He wears ornate armour and necklace with a cross-shaped pendant, probably a knightly insignia, a detail that underlines his high rank, perhaps belonging to the military nobility or a knightly order. The dignified pose, the serious face and the meticulous workmanship of the bust (especially the elaboration of the locks of hair and beard) are indicative of a prestigious patronage. The figure rest on a turned column that serves as the handle for the silver seal below, which is decorated with raised vegetal motifs. The bust could represent a historical figure or be inspired by a military ruler or a famous commander. Certain clues, such as the thick beard, the noble face, and the cross decoration, suggest figures like Henry IV of France (1553โ1610), known as the first Bourbon king of France, who is often depicted with a full beard, armor, and chivalric decorations.
