Gilded bronze sculpture on ivory base, Germany or Austria, 16th-17th century

Total weight: 3351 g
Antique gilded bronze sculpture resting on a carved elephant ivory base (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797).
The figure can be identified as an allegory of Mars, God of war, depicted standing upright with his right arm raised, holding a long spear topped with a circular element (perhaps alluding to a military insignia or solar symbol). His left arm, bent at the hip, accentuates the figure's proud and solemn attitude. The crested helmet, muscular armour and proud pose are typical elements of celebratory and apotropaic depictions of Mars, while the insignia he holds may allude to military power and victory.
The figure rests on a cylindrical base finely carved in relief with winged cherubs in a supporting position, alternating with dolphins, waves and plant motifs, transforming the scene into a harmony of strength and decorative grace.
The precious combination of gilded metal and ivory indicates a luxury destination linked to noble collections or Wunderkammern; in terms of style and iconography, the work can be dated to between the end of the 16th and 17th centuries and traced back to workshops in the Germanic or Austrian area, active in the production of small allegorical and celebratory sculptures intended for aristocratic collectors.
