made from hippopotamus ivory, it depicts a female figure in traditional dress, probably a geisha, carrying a child on her shoulders.
The woman's hair is gathered in an elegant hairstyle, while her kimono flows in soft folds embellished with subtle decorative engravings; the child holds a flower in his right hand.
Okimonos were hand-carved ornamental objects made in Japan as an artistic expression.
The term “okimono” literally means “posable object” and refers to small or medium-sized sculptures designed for display and often depicted themes inspired by daily life, nature, mythology and religion.
The carving rest on a wooden base.
