Ivory sculpture, France, 19th century
Total weight: 754 g
depicting a male torso, most probably identifiable with Napoleon Bonaparte, given the physiognomic resemblance and the military uniform adorned with epaulettes and decorations that recall French imperial iconography of the First Empire. The finely carved face shows an austere and pensive expression, with the gaze slightly turned to the left. The carefully combed hair is rendered with detailed engravings that emphasise the craftsmanship of the artisan. The uniform is enriched with finely sculpted details: embossed buttons, a medal on the chest and an insignia of a knightly order can be seen.
The bust rests on a turned ebonised wooden base with a square section, which enhances its elegance and ensures its stability. The base creates a pleasant chromatic contrast with the warm, natural ivory tone, enhancing the figure above.
Total height: 27 cm
Height x width x depth base: 9.5 x 8.4 x 7.6 cm
Height x width x depth ivory: 17.5 x 11.5 x 4.2 cm
