Nautilus cup, Europe, 19th century

Height x width x depth: 29 x 17 x 9 cm. Weight: 1300 g
(Nautilus Pompilius) mounted on an oval brass base, supported by a sculptural composition depicting a dolphin flanked by a cherub. The cherub, with one arm raised, holds an elongated, finely decorated element to which the nautilus shell is attached by a pin. A representative example of European production intended for collectors' items and cabinets of curiosities, it bears witness to great craftsmanship and attention to ornamental detail.
