The capture of Nicosia

Oil on canvas
cm. 44x47. Framed
This panel may be attributed to the circle of Jan van Huchtenburgh, among the leading Dutch specialists in battle scenes around the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It depicts the capture of Nicosia, a key episode of the War of Cyprus, showing the Ottoman commander Kara Mustafa Pasha confronting the Venetian general, with the cityโ€™s fortress visible in the distance. The composition is animated by vigorous cavalry action, centered on the clash of the two leaders. A rapid, nervous brushwork, warm tonalities and a fiery sky heighten the dramatic visual impact.
