Pair of Hokai gold and black lacquer covered for the Kai-awase game. Japan, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Height 19 cm
Each cylindrical bowl, with fluted sides, rests on four tall, flared feet. Decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with peony flowers on leafy vines against a black background, the edges and feet feature gilded metal trim, engraved with leafy vines. The inside of the lid is decorated with the "Noshi" motif, a symbol of prosperity.
