The painting depicts the mystical bird Xiuqiu in the center with characters of the pictographic dongba script.
Xiuqiu is known as a warrior god, in Tibetan worship as the mystical bird Garuda, which in Indian tradition is the vehicle of Vishnu. Xiuqu is the patron god of the Naxi people of Yunnan, the five cardinal points.
Artist Zhang Chun He is one of the leading exponents of Naxi culture and a pioneer of Dongba-style painting. He has exhibited at the Asian Art Museum in Nice, the Champollion Museum – Writings of the World, and the Capitolare Museum in Atri.
