A pair of paintings depicting battle and hunting scenes, 18th century
Height x width with frame: 54 x 77 cm
The first painting depicts a frenzied battle scene: in the foreground, a horseman wearing a striking white turban, identifiable as an Ottoman soldier, rides a gray steed in the midst of a head-on clash. The second painting, in stark thematic contrast, presents a bucolic genre scene: three male figures in 18th-century attire are depicted maneuvering a bird-catching net in a rural landscape. Presenting paintings of different subjects, a battle and a bucolic or hunting scene, as a pair was a common practice, creating a contrast between combat and the tranquility of rural life. Non-contemporary wooden frame.
