Propositiones theologicae di Michael Lodzinski, 1763

Etching and engraving, 875 × 565 mm. Printed at the workshop of Giovanni Zempel in 1762. Very rare.

The theses of Michele Łodziński, a pupil of Father Martino Natali, defended in 1763, caused a scandal that led to the intervention of the Holy Office, as they expressed anti-Jesuit positions close to Jansenism. This stance not only fuelled the theological debate of the period but also placed the Piarist order in serious difficulty, exposing it to criticism and internal tensions. See: D. Armando, La repubblica in collegio. Gli scolopi a Roma tra Lumi e Rivoluzione, Naples 2023, pp. 81–84.

Printed from five plates (one large allegorical scene, three ornamental plates, and one with the coat of arms). Large-format print printed on two joined sheets of laid paper. Sheet in fair condition: one vertical fold and four horizontal folds, some holes at the centre near the folds, short tears along the edges, and some light stains.
