Forze di primavera, 1918 ca.
Pencil and tempera on beige paper applied on cardboard
12,5 x 20,5 cm
Signed lower left: Balla. Signed and titled on the back: Forze di primavera, Futur Balla. Label of Galleria La Paolina of Rome on the back.
Excerpt from the authentication by Dr. Gigli:“[…] Towards the end of the First World War, Balla revisited the traditional subject of landscape, reinterpreting it through the lens of Futurist theory: Everything moves, everything speeds forward, everything turns swiftly. A figure is never static before our eyes, but continuously appears and disappears. Due to the persistence of images upon the retina, moving objects multiply and transform, succeeding one another like vibrations within the space they traverse. […] The simplification of forms is articulated through the linee di forza theorised by Umberto Boccioni, his young pupil, while becoming enriched by the dynamism of emotional states that deeply engaged Giacomo Balla.

This tempera, inscribed on the reverse by Balla Forze di primavera (Forces of Spring), belongs to this particular phase, during which the theme of the forces of landscape gives way to that of the forces of the seasons. Sunlight assumes a dominant role, illuminating the blue sky and the spring meadows of his beloved Villa Borghese.”
