Part of a carved and engraved Buddhist ritual apron made of buffalo bone. Tibet, 19th century.
mm 130 x 40
Tibetan aprons for the lama dance, the Cham, are usually made of silk and enriched with intricate embroidery depicting terrifying deities such as Mahakala. Often decorated with human and animal bones, they are typical instruments of tantric deities such as Hevajra, Kalachakra, and Chakrasamvara, who warn humanity of the transience and impermanence of earthly existence. These ritual robes are worn by tantric masters during esoteric, necromantic, or initiation rites.
