"Scenes of Beijing" Ma Haifang (1956), 1998

Ink and tempera on paper
68 cm x 68 cm
The work depicts a scene of daily life during the summer in Beijing: a man with birds and children playing with crickets.

The artist is Beijing's leading artist of traditional scenes. Ma Haifang employed a classic style of traditional Chinese painting called "Boneless Painting." However, he broke away from that convention with his use of color. His works pulsate with reds, oranges, yellows, and greens.
