War rug. Colored wool and cotton. Afghanistan, ca. 1990.

160 x 93 cm approx.
Four juxtaposed machine gun silhouettes frame a collection of highly schematized elements representing tanks, helicopters, bullets and drones.
Rendered through the use of brightly dyed wool, these symbols of war acquire a decorative value detached from their primary symbolic meaning. The instruments of offense are thus transformed and symbolically rendered harmless, because they are inserted into a language, that of Afghan rugs, which sees them united in the complex image of a natural universe created by God for mankind.
