David with the Head of Goliath

Oil on canvas
cm. 127,5x102,5. Framed
This remarkable painting reflects a broad and sophisticated visual culture, fully informed by the most significant developments in Neapolitan, Roman, and Emilian painting throughout the seventeenth century. While echoes of Guido Reni, Lanfranco, Guercino, and Domenichino can be perceived, it is above all to Naples that one must turn in order to define more precisely the artistic coordinates of the author of the canvas. In particular, the work reveals a careful and personal re-elaboration of the painting of Andrea Vaccaro, Massimo Stanzione, Mattia Preti, and Luca Giordano: a complex web of influences that may point towards the Cavaliere Giacomo Farelli, who, moreover, counted among his most successful works several versions of David with the Head of Goliath.
