Goddess of Fortune. Grand Tour period, 18th-19th century. Black patinated bronze.
Overall 19 cm
A rare subject depicting the Goddess of Fortune, characterized by a veil that, when blown by the wind, carries her in unpredictable directions. She is often depicted with a sail or balanced on a sphere, always indicating her precariousness and capriciousness.
Note the forward tension that underlines the possible sudden change.
Similar examples in the Civic Museums of Padua attributed to the school of Gerolamo Campagna or Tiziano Aspetti, already in the 16th-17th century, identified as Venus in the sea, but easily allegories of fortune.
It falls within the archaeological taste already present in the Renaissance in full agreement with the neoclassical era.
