Venus of the Shoemaker. Chiurazzi Foundry, Attributed. Naples, 19th century. Bronze with archaeological patina. Contemporary round red marble base.

Overall 18.5 x 7 x 7 cm
This exquisite bronze statuette depicts Venus tying her shoe. The original was found in the excavations of Pompeii.

The excavations of Pompeii began under Charles III of Bourbon towards the middle of the 18th century and continue to this day.

The Chiurazzi foundry in Naples devoted itself assiduously to the reproduction of the bronzes and sculptures found in the excavations.

Other foundries, such as the Sommers, fell into line.

Archaeological Venus statues with similar subjects are present in several museums, first and foremost the Archaeological Museum of Padua. The mimetic beauty of the Chiurazzi bronzes has led to many attribution errors over time, confusing them for Renaissance or, worse, Classical works.

Our Venus is present in the Chiurazzi catalogue at number 5133.
