Box made of walnut, velvet, and gilded bronze, Italy, late 17th – early 18th century
Height × width × depth: 11 × 18 × 14 cm
Oval in shape, with a domed lid. The structure is made of walnut wood, covered in red velvet, onto which are applied bands and plaques of gilded bronze featuring plant and geometric motifs, secured with headless nails. The lid features a bronze grille with rhomboidal links that covers the entire upper surface. On the front, the central lock is made of gilded bronze with a latch mechanism, and on either side are two ring handles. The casket belongs to the category of bedroom cabinetry, intended for storing valuable objects.
The bronze appliqués display transitional forms between the late Baroque style and the earliest precursors of the Rococo: the motifs, still symmetrical and structured, feature a lighter profile compared to the production of the high 17th century. The gilding was executed using the mercury technique.
The area of production can be traced to northern Italy, likely the Lombardy or Emilia regions (Duchy of Milan or Duchy of Parma/Modena), where the French style of the Louis XIV era was reinterpreted with a plasticity characteristic of the local tradition.
