French Louis XVI-style writing desk, France, 19th century

A mahogany center desk with an oak interior, in an exquisite Louis XVI style. The front features three drawers aligned in a row, centered by mahogany panels set within gilded bronze frames. The rectangular top is covered in brown leather embossed with gold, with the perimeter outlined by gilded bronze molding. The legs are truncated pyramidal in shape with fluted shafts, connected by collars and ending in quadrangular gilded bronze feet. It bears a double brand mark, “G. Durand,” below the two bands.

Specialising in the production of 18th century style furniture of the finest quality, Gervais-Maximillien-Eugène Durand (b.1839) exhibited at the Universelle Exposition of Paris in 1889, gaining a silver medal, and the praise of the judges, who compared their work with that of Beurdeley and Dasson With his son Frederic-Louis joining him around 1890, the firm changed its name to Durand et Fils.
