With its stylized and decorative style, the painting can be traced back to the artistic language of Symbolism and the Roman Secession movement of the early 20th century. The scene depicts a funeral lament: in the center, a group of female figures wrapped in wide black cloaks bow in a gesture of mourning, while on the right a young warrior lies lifeless on a white bier, his face crowned with a wreath of foliage, at his feet a helmet with a spear and a large bronze shield decorated with the head of Medusa, attributes that explicitly refer to the iconography of war and classical Greek heroism. In the background, decorative motifs inspired by ancient Attic pottery complete the archaic-classical setting.
