Gold snake brooch, Italy, circa 1865-1890

Crafted in the form of a coiled serpent, the brooch is set with an oval blue sapphire representing the head of the animal.

The design is particularly refined and reflects the naturalistic taste of the second half of the nineteenth century. The brooch displays stylistic characteristics typical of European production between 1865 and 1890, a period during which the serpent motif enjoyed extraordinary popularity in jewellery design.

Front dimensions: 4 x 3 cm. Weight: 5.7 g.
