Chosen Saints and the Mandylion of Edessa in the upper part. The surface of the object appears rather smooth, as the Old Believers regarded tarnish (oxidation, darkening) as a sign of corruption, and therefore wanted metal icons to remain shiny. When a metal icon began to oxidize, it was enough to quickly rub it with a cloth, possibly lightly sprinkled with chalk, sand, ash, or brick dust, and the icon would immediately regain its brightness.
