Russian Icon depicting the Holy Martyrs of Edessa (Gurias, Samonas, and Abibus) with Saint Euphemia, 19th century

Tempera on panel
Height x width: 34.5 x 28 cm.
This is an icon characterized by a subject deeply linked to family devotion and the protection of the home. The composition features a row of four standing figures in the foreground, captured in a pose of solemn prayer and intercession looking upward. From left to right, the three Holy Martyrs of Edessa are recognized: Saint Samonas, Saint Gurias, and Saint Abibus, portrayed in traditional vestments. Alongside them, on the right, Saint Euphemia closes the line of protectors with her head veiled in white and a red cloak, depicted with her hands raised in a gesture of supplication. The faces of the sacred figures, painted with minute and hieratic features, stand out against the golden background. In the upper part of the panel, within a red ogival reserve that simulates the opening of the heavens and is supported by a curtain of dark clouds, the half-length figure of God the Father emerges, extending his hands to bless the saints and the ideal devotee. The artwork is distinguished by a dense and evocative craquelure of the preparation (levkas) and color, combined with a warm and uniform period patina that enhances its collector's appeal.
