The painting is shaped like a circular fan (团扇, tuanshan) enclosing a complete scene. The surface is silk, which gives the painting a particular luminosity and delicacy. The theme is a classic Shanshui mountain landscape, with imposing mountains, pine trees, and a small building (probably a pavilion or hermitage) nestled in the landscape. The composition follows the rules of traditional Chinese painting, with a balance between "emptiness" (the sky and clouds) and "fullness" (the mountains and trees).
The artist uses a muted palette of greens, ochres, and black ink. The mountains are rendered with soft brushstrokes and shading (cunfa 皴法) that suggest the texture of rock, while the pine trees are painted with bolder, darker strokes. The style is reminiscent of the Orthodox School (the "Four Wangs" 四王) of the early Qing period, which placed great emphasis on the study and imitation of ancient masters.
At the top right, the calligraphic inscription and red seals. The calligraphy, in cursive or semi-cursive style, indicates that the painting was created the day before the annual Dragon Boat Festival "甲午," by an artist active in the Songjiang region, who signed himself "仲山氏" and declared himself to have "imitated the ancients."
