Gilded wooden figure depicting a Buddhist monk (Arhat/Luohan) standing on a lotus. China, late Ming Dynasty, 17th century.

With base: Height 43 cm; width 15 cm; depth 10.5 cm
Gilded wooden figure of a Buddhist monk (or Arhat/Luohan), standing on a lotus base. His right hand is raised in a gesture of teaching or reassurance (mudrā).
A shaved head, elongated ears, and monastic robe indicate a monk or an Arhat. The hand gesture (often the vitarka mudrā) symbolizes the transmission of the teaching.
Gilding was often reserved for figures of particular devotion.
