The title of the work takes its inspiration from the last sentence of the poem by Dao Qian, a famous monk-poet of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127).
风蒲猎猎弄轻柔，
欲立蜻蜓不自由。
五月临平山下路，
藕花无数满汀洲。
Reeds rustle in the wind, swaying gently; the dragonfly longs to land, but finds no rest. In May, on the road at the foot of Mount Linping, countless lotus flowers cover the sandy islands. The work is a classic example of Huang Yongyu's artistic maturity, combining the tradition of Chinese ink painting with a bold, modern use of color. The background is an expressive chaos of black, green, and blue brushstrokes, from which white cranes with red accents on their heads emerge. The cranes, with their stiff, elongated legs, are a hallmark of the artist's style.
The subject of cranes is a symbol of longevity, peace, and nobility in Chinese culture. The title "藕花舟放" ("Countless lotus flowers fill the sandy islands") suggests an aquatic setting, consistent with the cranes' long legs and the movement of the water suggested by the background.
