The two volumes are a significant example of 19th-century French sinology, which combined a scientific interest in China with a passion for detailed illustrations.
The plates, based in part on original drawings by Father Castiglione (a Jesuit painter active at the Qing court), the Chinese painter Pu-Qua, William Alexander, Chambers, Dadley and others, offer a unique visual testimony of the costumes, architecture, scenes of daily life and ceremonies of the period.
The edition is known for its 181 lithographed and colored plates, created by artists such as Aubry-Le-Comte, Deveria, and Grévédon, based on the original drawings. The first edition contained 180 plates.
