The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Nicola Ivanoff, dated 1 October 1977, attributing it to Nicolas Régnier’s early Caravaggesque period and comparing it to the Supper at Emmaus in Potsdam, while noting the tendency towards classical idealisation that would characterise much of the artist’s subsequent production.
