Christ at the Column
Oil on canvas
cm. 83,5x72. Framed
The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Nicola Spinosa.
Ribera explored subjects from the Passion of Christ throughout his career, particularly between 1615 and 1630. According to Nicola Spinosa, the present painting is an autograph replica of the Christ at the Column in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin, datable to the mid-1620s. The two paintings share close similarities in the treatment of Christ’s face, compositional format and naturalistic handling, both drawing on the figure of Christ in Ribera’s The Deposition (1621–1622) in the National Gallery, London, painted for the Genoese prince Marcantonio Doria.
