biography
Corrado Cagli was an Italian artist born in Ancona in 1910 into a Jewish family. He moved to Rome in 1915, where he completed classical studies and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, beginning his artistic career early with illustrations and mural works. Throughout his career, Cagli distinguished himself as a painter, sculptor, ceramist, set designer, costume designer, and tapestry designer, also engaging in graphic and monumental art. In the 1930s, he was a key figure in the artistic debate with the "Muri ai pittori" appeal and the primitivist poetics, aiming to revive ancient and mythic themes outside the classicism of the "Novecento" movement. After World War II, he successfully alternated between figuration and abstraction, rejecting rigid opposition between the two and experimenting with a complex dialectic to explore new expressive forms. His work reflects a historical responsibility and continuous innovation, as seen in his significant works from the 1960s and 1970s. Corrado Cagli is regarded as a versatile and experimental artist whose legacy is honored in exhibitions and auctions, including those by the Bertolami Fine Art auction house.
