biography
Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Il Canaletto, was born in Venice in 1697, likely on October 17 or 18, to Bernardo Canal and Artemisia Barbieri. Coming from a well-off but non-aristocratic family, he began his artistic training under his father, a theatrical scenery painter. Around 1719, he moved to Rome, where he focused on landscape views, inspired by masters such as Gaspar van Wittel and Luca Carlevarijs. Returning to Venice, he became the leading figure of 18th-century Venetian vedutismo, noted for his topographical accuracy, meticulous atmospheric effects, and strict use of perspective, sometimes aided by the camera obscura. His works scientifically and objectively depict the lagoon city and its inhabitants, reflecting the rationalist ideas of the Enlightenment. Canaletto also worked as an engraver and typographer, producing artworks in Venice and England, where he stayed for about nine years. Despite a reputation for being demanding and expensive, he received important commissions from prominent collectors. He died in Venice in 1768, leaving a crucial artistic legacy in landscape and vedute painting. His works remain highly sought after and frequently appear in prestigious auctions, including those held by the Bertolami auction house.
