biography
Giovanni Bellini, also known as Giambellino or Zuane Belin in Venetian dialect, was one of the greatest Italian painters of the Renaissance, born in Venice around 1430 and died there in 1516. Son of Jacopo Bellini and brother of Gentile Bellini, Giovanni grew up in a family of artists that deeply influenced his artistic development. His career spanned about sixty years, during which he became a central figure in Venetian painting, successfully bridging the local tradition with the innovations of the Renaissance. Bellini trained in his father's workshop, learning the techniques of the Venetian tradition, but soon moved beyond late Gothic models to embrace new influences, including the art of his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna, the teachings of Piero della Francesca, Antonello da Messina, and Albrecht Dürer. His encounter with Antonello da Messina was particularly significant, as it introduced Bellini to oil painting, transforming his art into a more luminous and fluid style that paved the way for the tonalism characteristic of the Venetian school.

Bellini's works range from religious subjects to portraits, with particular attention to landscape details and chromatic depth. Among his masterpieces are the Pala Barbarigo for the church of San Zaccaria in Venice, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, and the Portrait of a Gentleman, now housed in the Uffizi Gallery. Bellini often collaborated with his brother Gentile and produced some of the most important works for the Doge's Palace in Venice, many of which were unfortunately destroyed by a fire in 1577. His art, innovative yet deeply rooted in tradition, influenced generations of artists, including Giorgione, who inherited his tonal style.

Despite his greatness, Giovanni Bellini is rarely mentioned in contemporary documents, and many aspects of his biography remain shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, his artistic legacy is undeniable: Bellini is considered the initiator of the Venetian Renaissance and one of the foremost exponents of Italian painting in the 15th century. His works are sought after by major auction houses, including Bertolami Fine Art, which frequently offers paintings attributed to him or his followers, testifying to the enduring fascination and value of his art in the art market.
