Barthelemy Prieur (Berzieux, 1538 - Paris, 1611)Workshop of
Nereid riding on a Dolphin, 17th century
Bronze, gold-redish patina with traces of dark brown patina
17x15x6 cm
Fine oil lamp with a Nereid riding on a dolphin. The physiognomy of the nymph follows the canons of female figures typical of Barthelemy Prieur's small format production.
This composition was already mentioned in an inventory made by Prieur's wife after his death. An exemplary in Brunswick (Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum) is considered autograph because due to the modeling freshness. Our lamp is characterized by similar modeling and reddish transparent patina, and it is therefore attributed with caution to his workshop.
Collector's item to be further studied.
