Two Knight-form Candlesticks, Germany 19th century
Bronze, patina
18,5x13,5x9 cm
Two candlesticks of German origin, refering to late medieval or Renaissance objects. As parallels see two candlestick preserved in the National Museum in Munich, cast in the late 14th century and featuring a small man in medieval cloths holding two candle-bearing bobeches on his outstretched arms.
Many German bronze objects were replicated in the 19th century in the wake of the Revival style, just like this pair of candlesticks. Howevere, the simplified, textured workmanship resembles the medieval modeling, leaving us with some doubt about the dating.
