The work could be a preparatory drawing for the series of etchings by Bartolomeo Pinelli entitled: "Nuova raccolta di cinquanta costumi de' contorni di Roma compresi diversi fatti di briganti" from 1819-1822.
The drawing bears an embossed stamp of an unidentified collection (P. M. within a circle) and an inscription in pencil on the lower margin: "BRIGANTI AVVERTITI DELLA FORZA CHE GIUNGE".
