Mediterranean coral Christ at the Column, Sicily, 18th century

carved Mediterranean coral (corallium rubrum), conventional depiction of Christ scourged and tied to the pillar; this small sculpture represents one of the five Sorrowful Mysteries, namely: the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane, the scourging of Jesus at the pillar, Jesus crowned with thorns, Jesus' ascent to Calvary under the heavy wood of the Cross, and Jesus' crucifixion and death after three hours of agony.
