Girolamo Lombardo (1506 - 1590)Design by
The Flagellation, Probably 16th-17th century
Bronze with reddish patina
45 x 35 x 4 cm
This important high relief bronze repeats the similar subject created for the Milan cathedral ciborium by Aurelio, Girolamo and Ludovico Lombardo. Commissioned by Pius VI in the middle of the 16th century, it was cast in the Loreto workshop of the Lombardo family together with other seven episodes from the life of Christ.
The same reliefs were replicated for the monumental tabernacle of the Vasto cathedral, now in the city's diocesan museum. Some time later they were replicated with some variations on the doors of the Loreto cathedral.
The quality of the chisel and the splendid patina (transparent with reddish tones) suggest it may come from Lombardo foundry in Loreto.
Attached are scientific tests of the metal alloy. Probably cast before the 19th century.
