This type of reliquary is called a speaking reliquary because its form reflects the nature of the relic contained within: in this case, likely a bone from the hand of the three saints.

The relic is housed in the section representing the sleeve, securely held in place by a cartouche bearing the names of the saints in order: Saint Andrew, Saint Matthew the Apostles, and Saint Agatha the Virgin and Martyr. The whole is protected by an oval plate of rock crystal, sealed with two wax seals.
