A Russian bronze travel icon, 19th century
Height x width: 10.5 x 8.5 cm. Weight: 505 g.
Gilt bronze representing the Mother of God Joy of the Afflicted, glorified in 1688 after the intercession and miraculous healing of Patriarch Ioachim's sister.
During the 18th century the icon knows many variations influenced by more Catholic iconographic elements.
The common characteristic is the image of the afflicted turning their prayers to the Mother of God, their protector and patroness. The afflicted are consoled by angels sent by the Mother of God. The Virgin dominates the scene in the central part; she is portrayed full-length with a scepter in her left hand. Around her are crowded numerous supplicating worshippers.
